LUNGWORM ALERT

We are currently promoting the use of our wormer, Milbemax, in the practice, due to a constant rise in the number of cases of lungworm in the West Midlands. Lungworm is carried by slugs and snails and is passed to dogs eating grass that contains an infected slug or snail. The worm leads to serious effects such as heart and lung disease, and blood clotting problems and can even cause paralysis. In rare cases, it kills the dog. At the Oaks, we have seen several confirmed cases of lungworm and several more of suspected disease. It can be difficult to diagnose and treat and can leave long-term problems afterwards.

Our recommendation for worming is to use Milbemax wormer (which covers round, tape, and lungworm in a tasty tablet) at least every 3 months. For dogs that scavenge when out walking, those that eat slugs and snails, and dogs in households with young children, we recommend monthly worming. To support our clients and help ensure this is done as often as necessary, we offer our wormers on a 4 for the price of 3 discount, per pet and can send out reminders by text for anyone who needs a little help remembering to dose the dog!

Of course, it is equally important to ensure your cat gets wormed and although lungworm is not such an issue, tapeworm is more common. Cats that have had fleas or are hunters should be wormed monthly and even indoor cats should be wormed every 3 months as they still get roundworm from eggs walked in from outdoors, and ingested whilst grooming.

Our 4-FOR-THE-PRICE-OF-3 WORMING OFFER is on for the foreseeable future. Give us a call during opening hours to order worming tablets. We do need to have seen and examined your animal since September 2023 and within 12 months to prescribe prescription medicine.
